In July 2014, a consulting company that provides learning solutions asked me for a very specific work sample.
Requested
Develop a one-page Quick Reference Card on the topic “Creating a Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation” for novice computer users. The required elements are:
-
- Task-based steps
- Screenshots (as appropriate)
- At least one (1) “Important Note”
- At least one (1) “Best Practice”
- Use our company logo
- Use your most current version of MS PowerPoint
The “Important Note(s)” and “Best Practice(s)” should be developed at your discretion based on your professional experience.
Delivered
I created a one-page QRC. But, knowing that not every employee would have the paper QRC with them when they needed it, I created two electronic versions of content similar to the basic QRC: a short how-to video, and a quick, interactive elearning.
The video is less than two minutes, and can be accessed with a variety of equipment, from laptops to tablets and mobile phones.
Since people learn a software process best when we are able to click through the steps, the interactive elearning should help employees to get up-to-speed quickly. Since it only takes about 3 minutes to complete, it is quicker and less formal than a traditional elearning course.
